Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Michael Joiner sentenced Ryan Gerald Russell, 38, white, to death for the murder of his 11-year-old cousin Katherine Helen Gillespie in June 2008. A jury made the recommendation to punish him with the death penalty on Nov. 22 (see).
