The man convicted of murdering a couple inside a Jefferson County motel in 2018 was sentenced to death Wednesday.
Steven Mulkey, 31, White, was sentenced to death for the 2018 murders of Ching, 77, and Siumei, 75, Kao, the owners of the Siesta Motel in Irondale. Police said Mulkey beat the couple to death with a hammer inside the motel.
Around a week after the attack, Mulkey was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals in Virginia. The couple's bodies were found off Rex Lake Road in Leeds the following day after Mulkey provided information that led the discovery of the bodies.
