L.A. County Superior Court Judge Curtis B. Rappe sentenced Michael Hughes, 56, black, to death for killing 3 women between 1986 and 1993. Hughes was convicted in November 2011 of the 1st-degree murders of Yvonne Coleman, 15, Verna Williams, 36, and Deborah Jackson, 32. A jury recommended on December 13 (see) that he be sentenced to death. He had already been serving life in prison with no parole for 4 other murders.
