Contra Costa County judge John Kennedy has sentenced Darryl Kemp to death for the 1978 murder of 40-year-old Armida Wiltsey whose death remained unsolved for a quarter-century. The death sentence handed down by Judge John Kennedy was the 2nd imposed on Kemp. Kemp, 73, first received the death penalty in 1960 for the 1959 rape and murder of Marjorie Hipperson, but that when California suspended the death penalty in 1972, Kemp was paroled. He had been out of prison for four months when on Nov. 14, 1978, he attacked Wiltsey on a jogging path and killed her by either strangulation or suffocation. The case went cold for decades, until DNA linked Kemp to the murder in 2005. At the time, he was serving a life sentence for 3 Texas rapes.
