23-year-old Robert Ray was sentenced to death today by an Arapahoe County jury. Ray will be sentenced to death officially on July 16 by Arapahoe County District Judge Gerald J. Rafferty. Ray will join his accomplice in the case, Sir Mario Owens, on death row. Ray was convicted of orchestrating the June 20, 2005, shooting deaths of Javad Marshall-Fields and his fiancee, Vivian Wolfe, both 22. Marshall-Fields and Wolfe were shot just before Marshall-Fields was scheduled to testify against Ray and Owens in the shooting death of Gregory Vann the year before. Ray will be sentenced to life without parole for Wolfe's murder. The case began on July 4, 2004, when Ray and Owens shot and killed Vann. Marshall-Fields was wounded in that shooting. Despite losing an eyewitness against them, both Ray and Owens were convicted of killing Vann. Owens is serving life in prison without possibility of parole. Ray was sentenced to 108 years. Owens was sentenced to death on June 16, 2008, for being the trigger man.
