USA - Florida. A jury recommended the death penalty for Rhonda Norman

By a vote of 9-3, a jury recommended the death penalty for Rhonda Norman, 36, black. Norman was convicted this summer of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the August 2006 death of Jane Tackaberry, 53, and the stabbing of Tackaberry's 6-year-old grandson, Elijah. Norman told police it was an act of revenge because she was furious at Tackaberry's son, John, her former boyfriend, for cheating on her. Further legal arguments will be heard on Dec. 11, after which Circuit Judge Sandra McSorley will decide whether to agree with the jury's recommendation or to instead sentence Norman to life in prison. Defense attorney Gregg Lerman said she was born to a single 16-year-old mother who admitted to drinking during the pregnancy. She was raped at age 12 and gave birth to a stillborn son. Police say Norman enlisted a man from the street, Wes McGee, to help in the attack. 15 women have been sentenced to death in Florida, but only three have been executed. The most recent was Aileen Wuornos, who died by lethal injection in 2002. By now, there is one woman, Tiffany Cole (see 06/03/2008), among the 388 prisoners on Florida's death row.
