USA - Florida. Judge William Hallman sentenced Carl Dausch, 53, white, to death

Sumter County Judge William Hallman approved the death penalty recommendation given by a jury on December 16 for Carl Dausch, 53, white, in the July 14, 1987 death of Adrian Renard Mobley, 27, black. The man was raped. The 8-4 vote by the jury in December was one more than required to give Dausch death over life in prison. Sumter County sheriff's detectives ran cold on the case until 2004 when at least 1 cigarette butt retrieved from the Honda was tested for DNA. That DNA pointed to Dausch, an Indiana prison inmate at the time, serving 60 years on an unrelated rape and battery conviction. Along with DNA from anal swabs, in which the prosecution also said tied Dausch to the murder, he was eventually indicted in the case.
