The Florida Supreme Court overturned a death sentence of Michael Coleman, 45, black. Coleman, who has been on death row for over 20 years, will now serve a life sentence for his role in the Sept. 20, 1988 torture murders of 4 people — Derek Devan Hill, 22; Michael McCormick, 25; Mildred Baker, 22; and Morris Douglas, 25. The Supreme Court opinion found that Coleman’s attorney Ted Stokes didn’t present evidence during the death penalty phase of the trial that would have been favorable to his client. The jury that convicted Coleman recommended a life sentence, but Circuit Judge Nick Geeker ignored the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Coleman to death saying “no case warrants death if this doesn’t."
