The House Judiciary committee advanced the bill (HB 7083) by a 14-4 vote. The bill would speed up the death penalty in Florida. It creates tighter timeframes for appeals and post-conviction motions and imposes reporting requirements on case progress. Florida has 405 inmates on death row. Cases now take an average of 13 years to get from sentencing to execution. Jeff Nelson told committee members to spare future families the long wait his family endured. His 10-year-old sister Elisa was abducted and killed by a man who was executed last week after 32 years. And 28 people now on death row have been there even longer. Rep. Matt Gaetz, White, Republican, is sponsoring the Timely Justice Act.
