A St. Louis County jury is recommending Gregory Bowman be put to death for a decades-old murder. On Thursday, the jury convicted Bowman, 58, white, of capital murder. DNA evidence tied Bowman to the June 1977 rape and murder of high school student Velda Rumfelt, 16. Formal sentencing will take place December 11. Prosecutors said the man is responsible for two other murders in the 1970s. Bowman previously spent 28 years in prison for the 1978 killings of 14-year-old Elizabeth West and Ruth Ann Jany, 21, in Illinois. Those convictions were thrown out after a sheriff's deputy admitted to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Bowman had been tricked into confessing. The charges have been refiled, and he is waiting to be retried.
