A Lucas County judge decided that William Thomas is mentally retarded, and therefore his death sentence must be converted in a life sentence. Thomas, 53, black, was sentenced to die for the Nov. 23, 1994 beating to death of his 87-year-old neighbor Florence "Mollie" Newbirt.
