USA - Pennsylvania. A jury sentenced George Hitcho Jr., 46, white, to death

A Northampton County jury sentenced George Hitcho Jr., 46, white, to death for the 1st-degree murder of police officer Robert Lasso, 31, on Aug. 11, 2011. Judge Anthony Beltrami affirmed the sentence. Pennsylvania has 202 inmates awaiting execution, not counting Hitcho. The last person to be executed was Gary Heidnik on July 6, 1999. Prior to that were 2 executions in 1995. "Throughout all these years various governors have signed execution warrants, many of them," state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton said today. "They've all been stayed at various levels of different courts."
