Luis Salazar, 38, hispanic, was put to death. Salazar was condemned for the Oct. 11, 1997 fatal stabbing of Martha Sanchez, 28, during a burglary. Erick, the 10-year-old child of the woman, was also stabbed when he came to his mother's aid. Salazar testified at his trial that after a night of marijuana, cocaine and drinking he thought he was in his own house just before dawn Oct. 11, 1997, and that Sanchez and her three children, including an infant and a toddler in her bedroom, were intruders. Salazar becomes the 12th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas and the 435rd overall since the state resumed capital punishment on December 7, 1982. Morris becomes the 20th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1156rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
