Supreme Court lifts stay of execution. The U.S. Supreme Court today denied the appeal of Cleve Foster, and lifted the stay on his execution, clearing the way for a Tarrant County judge to set a new execution date. Foster, 47, was about to be executed last week when the court stepped in at the last minute and granted him a stay. Justices did not comment on reasons for the stay, nor was there any comment today when the Supreme Court denied Foster's claims that he lacked effective legal representation during part of the appellate process. Foster was sentenced to death by lethal injection for the 2002 rape slaying of Sudanese immigrant Mary Pal.
