Death row survivors to speak at event. Opponents of capital punishment are adding some powerful voices to their cause in Virginia. The advocacy group Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty is conducting a rally on Saturday in Richmond that will include death row survivors. They were scheduled to be executed but were ultimately exonerated. Advocates said 25 of the 138 people who were on death row then exonerated are scheduled to speak at the Capitol Square event. They'll also gather later at St. Peter's Catholic Church for what organizers call face-to-face discussions. Since the death penalty was reinstated in the United States, Virginia is second only to Texas in the number of executions it has conducted.
