Vo Thanh Trung, a 24-year-old unemployed man, was sentenced to death by firing squad by a court in Vietnam's southern province of Can Tho after being convicted of murdering his neighbour, Huynh Van Quy, in October 2003. It was alleged that Trung borrowed a bicycle from Quy and sold it to a pawnshop. When Quy asked for it back, Trung lured him to a deserted canal where he strangled and drowned him. After taking Quy's gold necklace, he dumped the body in the canal and fled. Police arrested him five days later.
