Western Cape Premier Peter Marais called for the re-instatement of the death penalty in order to end a spate of murders and rapes, the SABC reported.
Marais was speaking at the funeral service of Melissa Deemas, 9, who was found murdered in Kraaifontein earlier this week.
Four juveniles have been arrested in connection with her murder.
About 150 Kraaifontein residents, including at least 70 children, afterwards marched to a local police station, demanding that the death penalty be re-instated and that the boys be released so that the community could punish them.
