Yugoslavia could become a full member of the Council of Europe by June 2002, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Lord Russel Johnston said after visiting the Federal Yugoslav Parliament. Currently Yugoslavia has guest status in the Council of Europe.
Johnston said the Council was pleased with Yugoslavia's progress, but membership in the Council Yugoslavia requires the abolition of the death penalty, amendments to its national minorities law, the continuation of institutional cooperation with the Hague War Crimes Tribunal and the observation of civil rights and liberties.
