Yusuf Zhumayev and Azizbek Karimov were executed in secret. The executions were carried out despite an appeal by the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the authorities of Uzbekistan to issue a stay while it was considering allegations that their trials were unfair and that they were tortured and ill-treated in pre-trial detention. Uzbekistan has in the past repeatedly neglected similar interventions by the Human Rights Committee and has executed at least 12 men on whose behalf the committee had intervened.
Yusuf Zhumayev had been sentenced to death in April 2003, convicted of murdering his brother’s wife and his niece and nephew in January that year. He had consistently maintained his innocence and alleged during his trial that he had been tortured by police to force him to sign a “confession”. He claimed to have been tortured, hung upside down and beaten. He was also reportedly tortured with electric shocks and had to lie down naked on a wet and cold concrete floor.
Azizbek Karimov had been sentenced to death on 16 February 2004 on charges including "terrorism" and participating in a religious extremist organization. The Uzbek Supreme Court had sentenced Karimov to the death penalty, after convicting him of being one of the plotters of the explosion on 27 December 2002 at Oberon marketplace in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzistan, which claimed seven lives. Aziz Karimov was also charged with other crimes which led to the death of other innocent people and with being involved with the Taleban in the war in Afghanistan. He was reportedly beaten unconscious when he was arrested, and tortured in custody.
Azizbek Karimov's mother had to be hospitalized when she suffered a heart attack on hearing the news of her son's execution. In recent years the Uzbek authorities have arrested a number of members of Azizbek Karimov's family. His father and uncle were sentenced to long-term imprisonment in 1999 for «religious extremism». Both died in a prison colony, reportedly as a result of torture.
