Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Legal Resources Foundation wanted the Supreme Court to order Mugabe's office to release the reports of two commissions of inquiry he appointed: one of these covered mass executions, disappearances, illegal arrests and brutality committed almost exclusively on members of the Ndebele tribe, by the Zimbabwe army, particularly the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade and Mugabe's secret police in the mid-eighties. A private study carried out jointly by the LRF and the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe estimated that up to 8,000 people were butchered.
