A bloodless coup in September 2003 ousted president Kumba Yala. Henrique Rosa was chosen by the military authorities to be head of state until fresh elections could be held. Rosa, who was sworn in on September 28, 2003, has been charged with organising parliamentary elections within six months and a presidential election 12 months later to return this former Portuguese colony to civilian rule.
