A Chinese court sentenced Zhu Maishu to death for killing a SARS inspector who was on patrol in his back yard, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Zhu Maishu used a blade meant for slaughtering hogs to kill Wang Shuangzhu on April 26 in Feng village, in the SARS-infected northern province of Hebei. The murder was one of many violent episodes in the Chinese countryside during the peak of the SARS outbreak in Beijing in late April and early May.
Riots occurred in other outlying areas scrambling to arm themselves against the epidemic.
Wang belonged to a SARS prevention team summoned to Zhu's village after a vehicle with non-local plates refused to stop at an inspection checkpoint blocking access to outsiders. It was reported that Wang's team knocked on Zhu's door in search of the passengers but left after Zhu, drinking with friends, told the team no outsiders had entered his home.
Later, however, Zhu discovered Wang and his colleagues still patrolling behind his home and became enraged, raising the blade and delivering two blows to Wang's heart, Xinhua said.
