A Chinese man who beheaded a crying baby during a botched 10 yuan (1.20 Us dollar) robbery has been sentenced to death, state media reported Thursday. Huang Zhongyuan was arrested in March last year after the attempted rape of a woman picking vegetables in a field in Jiangnan village, Guangxi Autonomous Region, and during interrogations admitted to the unsolved baby murder from 1996.
The Information Times said Huang had gone to Nanhailuo village in southern Guangdong province collecting garbage when he spotted a woman surnamed Wang with the baby resting in a migrant workers shed.
Huang demanded money from Wang and when she resisted he took a knife from his pocket and slashed her.
Amid the struggle, the baby woke up and started crying so Huang picked up a kitchen knife and hacked off its head, the paper said.
He then used the same knife to cut Wang's throat before stealing the 10 yuan from her.
Huang was tried and received the death penalty, which was confirmed by the Guangdong Provincial Supreme Court in recent days, the report said.
China frequently resorts to the death penalty, executing more people in a year than all other countries put together.
