A court in Almaty sentenced to death by shooting two of the three men accused of cannibalism. The third was sentenced to eight years in jail.
During the trial prosecution proved that the gang killed and ate a minimum of seven girls in Almaty over the course of almost two years.
The criminals picked their victims from among prostitutes who stood on roadsides. They took them to an apartment that belonged to one of the gang's members, made them helpless with vodka or drugs, and then killed them.
They then cut the bodies into pieces and used the meat to make shish-kebab or mince. The cannibals' relatives tried it as well, without knowing what the food was made of. Two girls who managed to run away from the cannibals' apartment gave investigators the lead.
In the course of the investigation, the suspects willingly gave policemen details of the crimes they had committed. However, they later denied their own evidence and said the police had pressured them.
The suspects were examined by psychiatrists, who confirmed that they were mentally fit to stand trial.
