A court in central China's Henan province sentenced to death a woman convicted of buying and selling 13 children in a case linked to a nationwide network of baby trafficking, state press said. Li Zhonglian was sentenced to death by the Anyang intermediate court after she was convicted of trafficking the children between 1994 and 2002 and making 27,950 yuan (3,375 dollars), Xinhua news agency said. Li was also held responsible for the death of one child during the trafficking. Ten other people were sentenced to jail terms ranging from five to 14 years for buying and selling seven other babies. The children were bought in Yulin city, southern Guangxi province, and sold in Henan's Anyang county and in neighboring Hebei province. In November, two leaders of a gang accused of trafficking 118 babies were sentenced to death in Yulin in a case that shocked the nation. The gang included mid-wives, doctors and nurses who either bought or were given mostly young new born girls by farming families eager to meet China's strict "one child" family planning policies, but desiring male heirs.
