A death sentence was handed down to a serial killer in Uzbekistan, a Supreme Court source said.
Bakhodir Egamberdiyev, 40, a former traffic inspector from the Tashkent region, murdered nine young women over a period of two years, investigators said. There might have been other victims.
Egamberdiyev usually picked up unaccompanied women in his red Zhiguli automobile and drove them to a rural area. He then raped, robbed and killed them, the source said.
The Tashkent regional court found Egamberdiyev guilty on four counts including premeditated murder with particular cruelty, rape, and fraud.
Court doctors confirmed that the criminal was mentally healthy. "The court failed to find a single reason for leniency," the source said.
