a division bench of the Lahore High Court in Pakistan comprising Justice Tariq Shamim and Justice Hasnat Ahmad Khan confirmed the death sentence awarded to Mohammad Akhtar of Depalpur for killing Riaz Ahmad. The bench accepted the appeal of Akhtar’s brother, Muhammad Asghar, and acquitted him of the murder charges.
An Okara District and Sessions judge awarded the death sentence to Akhtar and life imprisonment to Asghar on December 13, 2002. Both brothers were also fined Rs 100,000 each. According to the prosecution, on September 10, 2001 at noon, Akhtar passed in front of the house of the deceased’s sister while whistling. Riaz admonished him and then both had a scuffle and the deceased slapped Akhtar, who then threatened the deceased. Soon, Akhtar and his brother, Asghar, armed with guns approached Riaz and shot him dead, also injuring his sister.
