A former Iraqi ambassador accused of embezzlement is in hiding in Austria to avoid a possible death penalty at home, according to the magazine Profil.
The magazine said that Neama Fares, ambassador to Austria from 1997 to 1999, had been accused by the authorities in Baghdad of complicity in embezzling embassy funds and of taking bribes from Austrian firms in return for arranging exports.
Fares is a former general who was celebrated as a hero in his country after the Gulf War.
