A French appeals court was scheduled to rule on February 18 whether Ira Einhorn, an anti-war student activist and leftist leader in the 1960s, should be returned home to face a retrial. In Washington, the United States had assured France that Einhorn, charged with murdering his girlfriend in 1977, would get a new murder trial and not face the death penalty if he was extradited. Einhorn jumped bail 17 years ago just before he was to be tried. After his disappearance from the United States, he was convicted in absentia in a Philadelphia court and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1993. He remained a fugitive until he was captured in France in 1997.
