A Gallup Poll shows that although a majority of Americans favor the death penalty, that percentage has been gradually decreasing and is now at 66%, its lowest level since 1981. Also among the poll findings: When given the alternative of life without the possibility of parole, the percentage of Americans favoring the death penalty drops to 52%; 91% of those polled acknowledged that over the past 20 years, there has been at least one person sentenced to death who was nevertheless innocent. The survey, based on interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,050 adults, has a plus or minus 3 percentage points margin of error.
