A Japanese court handed down the death penalty to Ryoji Ui, a 63-year-old man who killed a woman in 2001 while he was on parole.
Ui had served 19 years in prison for killing two other women in the 1970s before being released on parole.
Ui strangled Tamami Okatake, 57, on August 9, 2001, during an argument over money and abandoned her body in Okayama City, 550 km southwest of Tokyo, according to the ruling at the Okayama District Court.
"He repeated the brutal crime after receiving an opportunity to rehabilitate himself after having served some 19 years in prison," presiding judge Takumi Enomoto said. "He killed again, despite once having been sentenced to life in prison (for the earlier murders).
Capital punishment cannot be avoided," the judge said. At the time of the crime, Ui had been on parole since November 1999.
