A man wanted by Egypt for attempting to kill a former prime minister was arrested by British police on suspicion of terrorism-related activities.
Egyptian Yasser el-Serri, who is on the run from a death sentence by an Egyptian military court for his alleged involvement in an assassination attempt against then Prime Minister Atef Sedki in 1993, was arrested in west London.
Scotland Yard said a 38-year-old man, whom they refused to name, was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. A spokesman said the arrest was not connected to the September 11 attacks on the United States.
A London-based Islamist source close to Serri confirmed the arrest which he said was likely to be in connection with the assassination of Ahmad Shah Masood, the former leader of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. Egypt has repeatedly attacked Britain for its failure to extradite Serri, who has denied he tried to kill Sedki. In London, Serri has run the pressure group Islamic Observation Center.
London police have arrested five people under the Terrorism Act 2000, making it a crime to assist, support or participate in an act of terrorism in Britain or abroad, since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. Two have been released.
Algerian pilot Lotfi Raissi is one of the three still in custody. He is fighting extradition to the United States, where he has been accused of training four of the attack pilots.
