A man was sentenced to death in absentia in Bangladesh for throwing acid on a girl in Nandirbazar village that left her blind in one eye. Judge Nababur Rahman awarded the death penalty to Mohammad Anis, 22, of Sherirchar, who remained fugitive. According to the prosecution, Anis wanted to marry Rupali Begum, 18, a student. But her parents refused. On October 10, 2003, frustrated Anis threw acid on Rupali inflicting burn injuries in her face and body.
