A man was sentenced to death in Henan province for murdering his wife, adopted son and another person with poisoned soft drinks.
Du Keping was found guilty by the Intermediate People's Court in Nanyang city of using rat poison to kill his wife and adopted son, Du Yao, in June, the China News Service said.
The report said Du started to plan the murder in April when he bought 500 grams of rat poison.
According to the report, Du wanted to test the effectiveness of the rat poison and spiked bottles of soft drinks at two branches of the Wandelong Supermarket chain in Nanyang city. One customer who bought a soft drink later died and four became seriously ill. About a dozen more were saved after receiving treatment at hospitals.
The report said the court ordered Du to pay 281,500 yuan (HK$261,700) in compensation to the other victims.
After Du was convinced the rat poison was lethal, he offered bottles of spiked soft drinks to his wife and adopted son on June 20. They both died after consuming the beverages.
The report said Du wanted to kill his son because he was a thief. The report did not explain why Du killed his wife.
