A military court in Kyrgyzstan sentenced to death Asadullo Abdullayev, 24, and Ilkhom Izatullayev, 25, two Islamic militants of Uzbek nationality, after finding them guilty of plotting an explosion on December 2002 at a market in Bishkek which killed seven people.
Three more defendants, members of Kyrgyzstan's national guard, were given three-year prison terms for collaborating in the attacks, though two of them were freed in an amnesty.
The pair, members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), linked to Afghanistan's former Taliban rulers, were also convicted of causing a May 2003 explosion at an Osh bank, which killed a bank employee.
The trial was closed, with reporters allowed in only to hear the four-hour process of passing sentence. Both stood in silence as the ruling was announced.
The court was told both men had undergone training in "camps of international terrorists" in Afghanistan and ex-Soviet Tajikistan on its northern border.
"The court determined that (the defendants) were opposed to the existing constitutional provisions of the Republic of Uzbekistan," the presiding judge said.
