A motion, moved by opposition Democratic Party MP shadow attorney-general Kiraitu Murungi, that urged the government to introduce the necessary legislation to abolish capital punishment in Kenya was defeated in Parliament by an overwhelming majority vote of government and opposition MPs. Attorney-General Amos Wako said it was a constitutional issue to be tackled by the review commission. He, however, said that although international trends were geared towards abolishing, individual circumstances in the country should be considered.
