Human rights activists questioned whether the inmates were trying to escape in the first place after revelations that the guards on duty had been drinking. "Claims that the prisoners were trying to escape are spurious to anyone with knowledge of the security cordon permanently placed around prisoners on death row" said Mutuma Rutere a senior researcher with the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
