A newly-formed non-governmental organization called the 'Society Concerned about the Safety of Generations' (Mapeksi) has called on the government to introduce legislation enabling drug dealers to be sentenced to death. Mapeksi chairman Mulyana W. Kusuma told the press that abuse of narcotics in Indonesia had reached an alarming level. "We can't just stay calm seeing this condition. Therefore, we will propose to the government to make the death sentence mandatory for drug dealers," he said. Kusuma, a former executive director of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation Institute, said existing laws (No 22/1997 and No 5/1997) "only call for a life-long sentence, not the death sentence for drug dealers."
