Three people were sentenced to death and one to life imprisonment by the Kolkata city sessions court, India, for murder. It was alleged that on January 22, 1994, Kolkata Police constable Aloke Datta murdered his elder brother Biswanath with the help of Mrinal Datta, Gobinda Roy and his wife Mamata Datta. Terming it the rarest of rare crimes, judge Tapash Kumar Roy sentenced the first three to death and the other to life. "The henious nature of the crime warranted the highest degree of punishment," Roy said. No motive for the crime was given.
