A South African man, Bongani Mkhwanazi, escaped the gallows in Swaziland, SABC radio news reported.
The Court of Appeal in Mbabane dismissed a death sentence imposed on him by a local high court early in 2001. Mkhwanazi had his sentence reduced to a total of 25 years in jail, backdated to March 1998.
He was sentenced to death for killing a Swazi man, Elliot Dlamini, in Hlatikulu in the south of Swaziland in 1998. The three judges - all from South Africa - argued that Mkhwanazi was still a young man and was influenced by a traditional healer who told him Dlamini was a wizard.
Swaziland has 8 other prisoners on death row, but has no executioner to hang them at present.
