a special court in Patuakhali, Bangladesh, sentenced two people to death and 19 others to life term imprisonment in the sensational Jasim Sikdar murder case. The condemned convicts are Fakhrul Alam Taru and Mostafa Peyada, the latter being tried in absentia. Judge Giasuddin Ahmed acquitted seven accused as their guilt was not proved. According to the prosecution, some local people called Jasim out of his house at Pankhali village in Golachipa upazila and took him to an unknown place to present an arbitration on the night of October 4, 1994. Villagers found Jasim’s body in Peyadar Char three days later. But, the convicts drove the people away from the scene and threw the body in the river after cutting it into pieces. After investigation, CID police submitted the charge-sheet of the case to the court on February 28, 2006.
