A special court in Rajshahi sentenced Shariful Haq Koial to death for his attempt to burn his wife to death in 2003. According to the prosecution, the convict set fire to his wife Sima, 24, after dousing kerosene over her body after a brawl with her on August 11, 2003. She was rescued by neighbours and sent to hospital.
