A Union County jury decided that Wesley Shafer, sent to death row in 1998 for killing a convenience store clerk, will now serve the rest of his life in prison. Wesley Shafer, 25, had been sent to death row for the 1997 killing of Ray Broome, but the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that sentence because the jury was not told that a life sentence meant life without parole. Both of Shafer's co-defendants, Justin Matthew Porter and Adam Mullinax, pleaded guilty. Porter received a 30-year prison sentence, and Mullinax, who only drove the men to the store, was sentenced to one to 6 years under the Youthful Offender Act. Union County Public Defender Bill All also asked the jury to consider that Shafer was 17 at the time of the murder.
