A Yemeni court sentenced Mohsen Yehya Monassar, 42, to death by firing squad. He had been convicted of shooting dead seven boys and their teacher at a mosque in southern Yemen.
The boys, aged between eight and 15, were attending a summer camp for memorizing the Koran, the Muslim holy book, at a mosque in Lahaj province, about 190 miles south of the capital Sanaa, when the gunman struck on 30 July 2003.
Security sources said earlier that Monassar could be a Muslim extremist with a grudge against moderate Muslims.
