Amnesty International (AI) urged the Commission of inquiry, formed by Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa to investigate the 2001 Zanzibar killings, to carry out its activities independently.
President Mkapa swore in the probe commissioners on January 28 to probe the January 26 and 27, 2001 killings in Zanzibar, whereby over 20 people, mainly members of the opposition Civic United Front (CUF), were killed by the policemen.
