An 18-year-old man in east China's Fujian Province was sentenced to death recently for selling 1,000 amphetamine pills.
Hearing someone was selling amphetamines in Quanzhou city in Fujian Province in December 2001, local undercover police contacted two narcotics dealers and took a large sum of money with them to prove their sincerity.
The two dealers then phoned the seller, and the seller turned up soon afterwards. When he gave the police pills and counted the money, police arrested him and the two accomplices right on the spot.Subsequent investigations showed that the pill seller, named Chen Chunyan, was only 18 years old. This was the second time he had been caught selling narcotics. Chen is the son of a peasant family in suburban Quanzhou. Before graduating from junior middle school, he became infatuated with disco and began to take amphetamines. As Chen had no money to pay for the pills, he began to sell narcotics.
He was first caught by police in May 2001 when he sold a pill for 150 yuan (about 18 US dollars). But he was released afterwards as he was under the lawful age of 18 at that time.
