An anti-terrorism court on Karachi sentenced Shaikh Muhammad Amjad to death on charges of killing his next-door neighbour Barrister Shakir Latif.
The victim's father, Fazalur Rehman, accused Shaikh Muhammad Amjad of kidnapping his son on July 29, 2001 from the Marriott Hotel Karachi and subsequently killing him by giving poisonous liquor.
Later the defendant called Rehman and demanded Rs. 20 million as ransom for his son. Shaikh Muhammad Amjad was arrested on August 4, 2001 as he was calling to deceased's father from a public call office in Karachi's Saddar area.
