An editorial in English by Jordan Times web site said it appears that the brutal killing of women in the name of family honour continues despite all the efforts and the campaigns to eradicate this social phenomenon. As recently August 10 another woman allegedly fell victim to this form of extrajudicial execution. A medical examination proved that she had not been engaged in any sexual activity, or "shameful misbehaviour", as her accusers saw it. The tally of girls and women who reportedly lost their lives in the name of "honour" since the beginning of 2002 stands at eight - an average of one a month. Remedial efforts to combat this social disease have proven ineffective. Amending existing legislation has proven futile. All calls on the judicial system to stop being lenient towards the perpetrators of honour crimes have also proven useless.
Judges could apply the law more forcefully by handing down stiffer sentences against the killers. Above all such crimes, committed in the name of honour, must be categorized as first degree murder as they are always committed with malice and aforethought.
