As the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians turns increasingly ugly, Israeli troops face charges that they are carrying out execution-style killings.
Witnesses said a group of policemen had been in fourth-floor flat in a building in the centre of Ramallah when Israeli soldiers arrived. One woman, in a first-floor flat, said two were shot dead and three wounded. The badly mutilated bodies of the two policemen were taken to the mortuary at the Ramallah hospital.
Dr Munter al-Sharif, a hospital official, said: "You cannot recognise the head of one of the men. Maybe it was crushed by a blunt object or under a vehicle. The other policeman has multiple wounds to the throat, chest, head, and lower limbs. I consider this an execution."
During the day another six bodies were taken to the hospital from various locations in Ramallah.
"I am very upset with the state of these bodies too," Dr al-Sharif said.
"On one body there was a bullet inside the mouth, one inside the eye and ear. The important thing is that the entry wounds on these bodies are small and exit wounds are very large.
"It appears they may have been shot at a very close range."
According to local Palestinians, the killings follow a pattern in which several local men have died in questionable circumstances since Israeli troops swarmed into the city, searching building to building.
