At its annual congress in Centurion, the right-wing Herstigte Nasionale Party said that the death penalty would be reinstated and carried out in public under an Afrikaner government. They resolved that this was the only way to restore law and order in South Africa. The congress agreed that the government was doing nothing to stop crime and a motion adopted by the congress stated, "When South Africa is returned to Afrikaner government, the death penalty will be carried out in public to bring back the law and order we enjoyed during the apartheid years under (former prime minister) Hendrik Verwoerd."
